GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 11
Giuliani had written to Senate Majority Leader Ralph Marino pressing for a vote.
The anti-discrimination bill has already passed the Democratic-controlled state assembly and has the support of Gov. Mario Cuomo. It is also backed by New York City mayor David Dinkins.
Marino has said he will only allow the gay civil rights bill to come up for a vote if that is what his 35-member GOP majority wants. A closed-door meeting in the next few weeks will decide the bill's fate.
Supporters of the legislation hope that if the measure comes to the floor of the 61member Senate for a vote, it might pass with near unanimous Democratic support and some Republican votes.
Stonewall Awards honor five lesbian and gay activists
In late April, five community activists for AIDS education, gay and lesbian rights and women's interests were awarded the no-strings Stonewall Awards of $25,000 "for achievement for gay and lesbian America." The winners are:
Ernest Hite, Chicago, co-founder and president of Image Plus, a support organization targeting African-American gay and lesbian youth, and the HOPE Project, an AIDS education program;
Pat Norman, San Francisco, executive director of the California AIDS Intervention Training Center;
Suzanna Pharr, Little Rock, a community-action strategist who has spent most of the last year working against the Religious Right's anti-gay legislation in Oregon, where the legislation was defeated; and,
A joint award to Edward Sedarbaum, Queens, New York, founder of Queens Gays and Lesbians United, who leads programs to sensitize police about the gay and lesbian community; and his companion, Howard Cruse, pioneering gay and underground cartoonist.
Cleveland mayor is honorary chair of AIDS Walk
Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White has accepted the post of honorary chair for "Step in the Right Direction 1993," the third annual AIDS Walk to benefit AIDS and HIV services and education programs for the Greater Cleveland area. The 10K pledge walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 26 at Edgewater Park in Cleveland. This year's goal is participation by 2,000 walkers.
"AIDS/HIV is one of the most rapidly growing health problems in Greater Cleveland and requires a concerted effort on the part of everyone to combat this devastating disease," said White in accepting the post.
Adds Joseph Interrante, executive director of Health Issues Taskforce, "Step in the Right Direction is a powerful vehicle for increasing AIDS awareness in our community." The Taskforce, Ohio's oldest AIDS service and education organization, sponsored the Cleveland AIDS Walk in 1991 and 1992 and is the lead agency and fiscal agent for the 1993 walk.
All of the proceeds from the AIDS Walk will go directly to participating local, nonprofit organizations. These agencies are the AIDS Housing Council, the Free Clinic ,Health Issues Taskforce, the Living Room, and Stopping AIDS is My Mission. For more information on walk sponsorship, or other ways to support and participate in the 1993 Cleveland AIDS Walk, contact Juliann Fausel at 621-0766.
Mass. schools address gay youth
On May 18, the Massachusetts Board of Education became the first in the nation to endorse measures to protect gay, lesbian, and bisexual students in the state's schools. In a unanimous vote, the board endorsed the recommendations issued in February by the Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth.
The four measures encourage schools to develop policies protecting gay and lesbian students from harassment, violence and
discrimination; offer staff training in violence and suicide prevention, especially relating to gay and lesbian youth; offer school-based support groups for gay, lesbian and heterosexual students; and provide school-based counseling for gay students' family members.
"The Board of Education slice is just about right," said Governor William Weld. "They supported measures to support gay and lesbian students who might feel harassed or discriminated against." Weld, a Republican, went on to say that he feels parents need to teach their children "tolerance for diversity and nondiscrimination.”
Philip Johnson comes out
New York-Architect Philip Johnson is going public about his gayness.
The 86-year-old said that in 1977 he asked the New Yorker to omit references to his sexuality in a profile because he feared losing "the job of my life," the commission to design the new AT&T Building in New York.
Johnson also designed the Cleveland Play House's Bolton Theater and additions, completed in 1983. He spoke in part to promote a biography of him by Franz Schulze, due out next year.
Gay chorus association votes to leave Colorado
The board of directors of GALA Choruses, Inc. (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) recently voted to move their corporate headquarters out of Denver in direct protest of the passage of Colorado's anti-gay Amendment 2. The GALA decision will take effect barring action by the voters of Colorado to overturn the Amendment. A new headquarters city has not yet been selected.
